Oversized long coat with wide lapels in brown – Imperial

This long Imperial coat is all about controlled volume. The cocoon cut starts from a dropped shoulder, widens through the sleeves and curves down well below the knee, with no darts or belt to mark the waist. The very wide notched lapels open low on the chest: they give the piece its structure and its presence, whether worn closed or open.

Cut generously, it layers with ease over a blazer, a tailored jacket or a chunky roll-neck jumper, without pulling at the shoulders or arms. For the office, it extends a straight-cut trouser suit; at the weekend, it lifts wide-leg jeans and a white shirt; in the evening, draped over the shoulders above fluid trousers, it dresses up a dinner outfit. Loafers, ankle boots or court shoes all work.

It is cut from a thick, lightly brushed cloth blending polyester and viscose. The fabric has weight, hangs straight and does not crease, even after a day sitting down, and it is machine washable, which remains rare for a winter coat. The construction is clean: wide notched lapels, two vertical piped pockets, two low flap pockets and no visible topstitching.

Long oversized volume has become the defining winter line on the catwalks, worn open over sharply tailored outfits. The cocoon shape has another advantage: it allows more leeway than a fitted coat.
